Make the first weeks of a job clearer

A flexible starting plan for learning the work and asking useful questions.

Before you start

You can ask practical questions without explaining your whole personal history. If you need a particular change to take part, ask early enough for the employer to consider it.

  • Check where to go, when to arrive and who to ask for.
  • Ask what to bring and what the first day will involve.
  • Plan the journey and a fallback if something changes.

In the first few days

Find out how tasks are assigned and where instructions are kept. Ask who can answer questions when your usual contact is unavailable. Write down the things you want to be able to find again.

As the work becomes familiar

Notice where you keep having to guess. A vague deadline, competing requests or a spoken-only instruction may need a clearer agreement. Pick one recurring problem rather than trying to redesign your whole job.

Check what is helping

Use these questions when useful, not as another daily obligation. If the role is a poor fit, that is a situation to explore, not a verdict on your ability to work. Ask a trusted person or relevant adviser for help if you need it.

  • What is becoming easier?
  • What still needs a clearer explanation?
  • What small change would make the next week more manageable?
